If you've studied search engine optimization, even in a basic way, you probably understand the importance of inbound links. These are links from other websites to your website, thus the term "inbound." |
When another website links to yours, it passes a "vote" that helps increase your Google PageRank, your overall website ranking, and — ultimately — your website's visibility.
The long-term goal here is to create a great website that will eventually attract links without even trying. For example, I have a parody news website that gets a lot of links from bloggers without me having to do much (aside from maintaining the site's uniqueness). A legal website that was a truly impressive resource or knowledge center could do the same.
But during a website's "early days," you will have to go out and acquire some links to get the ball rolling. This is known as link-building, and it's a proven way to get your website moving up through the search engine ranks.
Here's the problem for most lawyers and law firms. Developing a link profile for a website can be exhausting and time-consuming, especially if you don't understand the best practices of the process. Some people take an "any website will do" approach to link building. Not me. I know that search engines judge your website on the quality of sites that link to you, so I focus on acquiring links from quality sources — well-established websites pertaining to real estate. Fifty high-value links are worth more than 1,000 weak links.
Elements of a Strong Link Profile
When it comes to a website's link profile, I believe in diversification. When your law firm's website has a broad mix of links from relevant, well-established sites, you will enjoy better search engine ranking over the long term. As such, my link-building efforts include the following techniques:
- Submitting your website to high-quality web directories
- Linking to your website from my own network of business sites
- Publishing articles on other websites in exchange for a link back
- Syndicating press releases online for additional links
For most law firm or lawyer websites, the techniques above will be more than enough to ensure good search engine ranking / visibility. This, combined with plenty of quality website content, can be the path to success with SEO.
